New York Fashion Week has come and gone, so what better time than now to highlight some Windy City style? Huffington Post contributor and founder of the popular Chicago fashion blog The Girls of Lincoln Park, Lauren Nelson chats with us about her great fans, her love of blogging and her advice for PR pros.
Q: When did you create Girls of Lincoln Park, and what made you decide to start fashion blogging?
A: I created Girls of Lincoln Park back in May 2011. I was working at a media agency at the time and just needed a creative outlet. The people I’ve met and the opportunities that have presented themselves along the way have truly been amazing. I basically created a world for myself that I didn’t even know existed. I went from having zero connections in the fashion industry to now working with designers, brands, and magazines. I always suggest to my friends that if they’re not loving what they are doing during the day, then to start a blog about something they’re truly passionate about and who knows, maybe that passion can turn into a full-time job.
Q: What is your favorite part of being a fashion blogger?
A: My absolute favorite thing about blogging is relating to other girls. I think that is one of the main reasons why GOLP has done so well. It’s not only about the products and brands we feature, but do you know how many girls live in Lincoln Park? I had an audience before I even built the blog! I love meeting and running into girls who tell me they read GOLP every day or that it’s on their RSS feed. That is the best feeling in the world to know you are relating to or making an impact on other people.
Q: What is the most challenging part of your career?
A: The most challenging part of this career is managing a million things at once and saying no. It’s hard to turn down opportunities but I try to remain true to the brand and what I believe is important. It’s also a challenge to ignore the nay-sayers. A lot of people consider blogging a pet project or something of the sort but it takes some serious time and dedication to run a blog and to grow a following. I love the quote “people either inspire you – or drain you, so pick them wisely.” It’s so true. So many of my good friends now I have met through blogging. We all share similar experiences and challenges.
Q: Where do you get ideas for your posts? Do you mostly focus on Chicago fashion, or all fashion in general?
A: I get ideas from anywhere and everywhere, whether it’s one of my favorite magazines, blogs, TV or just being out and about in Chicago! I focus on all fashion in general, and then will highlight any relevant Chicago fashion events. I do have to say, keeping content fresh and consistent is one of the hardest parts of blogging!
Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
A: Be personal. I get a ton of emails and it’s hard to distinguish what is legitimate or not. I love the PR professionals who take time to read my site first and explain how they see us working together.
Q: What are you PR pet peeves, or what is the strangest pitch you’ve received?
A: Haha. I love this question! I got pitched a pen one time. Not kidding! From one of the largest PR agencies in New York who I have actually worked with in the past! You just gotta laugh those ones off. At least they tried!
