Hardly a week goes by that I don’t discover an insightful blog post about social media or Internet marketing written by someone I’ve never heard of. How many people out there are blogging these topics? I checked our media research database, and found profiles for more than 300 such bloggers. Who has time to keep up with 300 blogs? A group like that can turn your RSS reader into a part-time job. So, I wondered whose blogs are the most influential. Web metrics nerd that I am, I gathered some data and ranked them.
Let me put a disclaimer here: there’s a limit to the effectiveness of using any sort of statistics to gauge a person’s influence on other people. Influence is a subjective thing by nature, and I’ve read lots of brilliant posts by people who didn’t make this list. Some of these bloggers wield more influence in social media education endeavors outside of their blogs, such as conferences, Webinars, podcasts and white papers. Nonetheless, I thought this list might be helpful for all of us faced with limited reading time. I chose two metrics to weigh equally in this analysis: Unique Visitors per Month as calculated by independent providers like Nielsen NetRatings, and Total Inbound Links, as provided by Google. Some of these blogs are more focused on the topics of social media and online marketing than others; some also place emphasis on the technology industry at large. For me, nearly all of the blogs that made this list are worth keeping tabs on, as are many more. Here are the results.

Nice list.
I’m a follower of Mashable, Scobleizer, and Logic + Emotion. There are still quite a few that I don’t know on that list. We need more aggregation tools out there to bring all the multitude of info together.

I’ve scanned this and quite a few of my favorite bloggers on this list, so it’s a pleasure to be among them.
Thanks for pulling this list together! There is so much info to follow out there – good stuff! And, of course, am delighted (and no doubt biased) that One Degree and MyNameIsKate made the list
Thank you!
yes, popularity is not a great metric, but I don’t have a better one. In the end influence depends on WHO is reading your content, and not how many people are reading your content. Ironically popularity is the antithesis of how social media works, because social media favors niches not masses. That being said i’m glad to be on the list
Cheers!

Check out that Conversation Agent blog. It might have a pulse
Great list, many familiar sites and a number of new ones to check out.
Cheers,

@emailkarma
John Jantsch’s Duct Tape Marketing must be on this list even if it was reduced to Top 10.

Great list!!! Just what I needed.
Excellent list! I’ll be checking this out one by one for my morning relaxation and adding them to my feed – thanks!

Interesting how results vary by measurement from list to list. Although many top blog lists include Google inbound links as a metric, I think this is the first ranking I’ve seen that also includes NielsenNet Ratings. Thanks Jay!

By researching traditional Web metrics like Unique Visitors per Month, along with social metrics like inbound links, you can create a list like this on any topic.

One of the most advantageous aspects of social media marketing is: it makes it easier for the businesses to establish a direct contact with their customers. Because it is cheaper, the small businesses with limited advertising budget can gain an exposure as big as their stronger rivals. Social media optimization helps in brand building in a way that no other internet marketing techniques can. It proves to be more effective than other online marketing methods simply because it works within the periphery of a closeer group and can penetrates at a personal level. As a result, it becomes easier for it to evoke trust and reliability for a brand.
